EU citizens call on UK ministers: uphold the foie gras import ban
CORPO DELLA MAIL
I am writing as a concerned citizen of Italy to express my deep worry that the UK Government may abandon its pre-election commitment to ban the importation of foie gras produced by force-feeding.
As someone from the EU, I want to emphasise that this is not just a UK issue. Citizens across the EU care about this cruelty, and many of our elected MEPs, including representatives from producing countries like France, Spain, and Belgium, recently called for force-feeding to be phased out.
Force-feeding ducks and geese until their livers swell to ten times their normal size is a documented cruelty, condemned by the UN’s FAO, the EU’s Scientific Committee on Animal Health, and illegal in the UK for nearly 20 years. Yet imports continue.
We urge you, as UK ministers, to uphold your commitment and ensure that EU-UK trade agreements include a clear animal welfare carve-out, allowing the UK to ban foie gras imports once and for all.
Abandoning this pledge would not only allow extreme suffering to continue but would also send the wrong signal internationally that promises on ethical issues can be traded away for political priorities.
Please act swiftly to honour this commitment. Citizens across the EU and the UK are watching.
