Zaandam, Tuesday 13th January 2026 – Right now, seven animal-rights activists from across Europe have chained themselves together in a civil disobedience action at the headquarters of global conglomerate Ahold Delhaize, demanding the company finally deliver on its long-standing promise to remove cages for hens from its supply chain – a promise it made a decade ago.
The activists have travelled from Italy, the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Spain to endure hours in the cold to send one clear message: Ahold Delhaize must go cage-free now.
This action marks the third civil disobedience protest against Ahold Delhaize. It follows months of “repression and restrictive measures” faced by activists, including actions in December where campaigners were prevented from fully exercising their right to protest and were unable to challenge those restrictions in court.
Ombretta Alessandrini, Campaigns Manager at Animal Equality, said: “Ahold Delhaize has shamefully broken its promise to animals who spend their entire lives confined in cages, unable to walk or stretch their wings. All of this suffering, simply in the name of profit for the company – it is scandalous. Ahold Delhaize is letting these animals down, but we never will. We will continue to show up and expose this company’s indefensible delays until cages are finally removed from its supply chain.”
Melchior Mattens – a municipal councillor in Zaanstad, Netherlands – attended to observe the action and show support. He said: “They did not deliver on their promise; they are shifting it forward in time. I am very happy that all these people come here and demonstrate time after time to tell Ahold that what they’re doing is wrong, it’s immoral and they should stop with it. And if Animal Equality is not coming here to tell Ahold, noone’s coming here to tell them that it’s immoral what they’re doing”.

Cosa è successo in Olanda
